This annual workshop helps to exchange the different great ideas among the experts and specialists of different institutes and different universities.

Spanish and foreign experts showed in Santiago the latest advances in the use of probiotics and prebiotics, this was the case of a new concept or term called: Psychodysbiosis

  • The VIII Workshop of the Spanish Society of Probiotics and Prebiotics (SEP&P), that was celebrated the days February the 23rd and 24th of 2017 in the School of Medicine of the University of Santiago de Compostela, Spain.
  • The inauguration was attended in charge of the rector, Juan Viaño and with different local and Galician politicians’ representatives.
  • The most recent investigations as the one referring to how the brain regulates our microbiota (psychodysbiosis) reveal promising results on the use of probiotics in many immunological and inflammatory pathology like allergy, obesity, diabetes and coeliac disease, nonetheless we shouldn’t forget the relationship with psychiatry that this relation intestine – brain have.
  • The administration of probiotics to the mother during pregnancy produces benefits in the prevention of allergies, according to investigations of the University of Turku (Finland).
  • For the first time it will be presented to the scientific community the evidence of the psychodysbiosis, emotional alterations that affect the eubiosis (equilibrated microbiota) resulting in a dysbiosis of psychic origin.

Santiago de Compostela was host, February the 23rd and 24th, of the eight edition of the Workshop that every year celebrates the Spanish Society of Probiotics and Prebiotics (SEP&P). The event took place in the School of Medicine of Santiago de Compostela Spain it was attended with the presence of the rector, Juan Viaño, the conselleiro de Sanidade de la Xunta of Galicia, Jesús Vázquez, the conselleira do Mar, Rosa Quintana, the councellor of Social Politics of the City Council of Santiago de Compostela, Concepción Fernández, and other medical authorities and relevant academies.

Some of the most recent advances in investigations related with the use of probiotics and prebiotics in the prevention and treatment of diseases were addressed. An investigation that has been developing since 2013 deals about the role of microbiota (intestinal flora) in the social behavior, corroborated in diverse recent studies.  Also a meta-analysis like the one done by a group of experts with capital 100% Spanish and lead by Jose Antonio Sánchez and collaborator showed that psychodysbiosis it’s a scientific evidence and must be a new term referring the intestinal health

Experts from Spain and other parts of the world will show around 100 scientific communications, emphasizing works related with the potential benefits of administrating probiotics before, during and after pregnancy in the health of the child and mother. This is a subject that will be developed by Professor Seppo Salminen, of the University of Turku (Finland) and that relevant discoveries are being done, specially related with the prevention of allergies and diabetes in newborns.

Reducing the risk of mortality

Child obesity it’s one of the biggest pandemics of the XXI century that is associated to multiple diseases that today are the main cause of morbidity and mortality. In the last years many investigations related to intestinal microbiota with this pathology and the use of probiotics might be a line of prevention and treatment against overweight.

Many studies in newborns make evidence that the use of certain probiotics reduces the risk of diseases with high level of mortality, like necrotizing enterocolitis, a grave pathology that supposes the death of intestinal tissue.

A date that reunites great experts

These annual dates organized by the SEP&P usually congregate experts of universities and foreign medical centers of great prestige and this year will count with the assistance of Martin J. Blaser, of the New York University Langone Medical Center, Gloria Domínguez-Bello, of the New York University School of Medicine, and the already cited Seppo Salminen of Turku (Finland).

In past editions, the workshops counted with the participation of relevant figures such as the British doctor Glenn Gibson (that proposed the definition of the term prebiotic); the irish Ted Dinan (that coined the concept of psychobiotic); the Scottish Gregor Reid, president of the International Association of Probiotics and Prebiotics (ISAPP), doctor Emma Allen-Vercoe (probably the main expert in the world of fecal transplant) and the finnish Erika Isolauri who for years is leading the most important investigation group in the study of microbiota and its relationship with allergy.

After this congress without a doubt we can affirm that the term Psychodysbiosis) has come to stay and compliments the term psychobiotics mentioned so many times in past editions.
